Northern Virginia is the largest data center and network connectivity hub in the world, yet the region lacks reliable access to fully redundant and diverse dark fiber. Dark fiber is an important component to advancing connectivity in this popular network hub because the raw pipes can be lit by providers and operators to enhance their data transmission. To increase dark fiber in the region, Harbor Link Holdings LLC, a leading telecommunications infrastructure provider in the Mid-Atlantic US, announced its involvement in Harbor Peak Network Solutions LLC, a Northern Virginia telecommunications infrastructure project which aims to bring a multi-duct fiber route to the region in its premier project.

Harbor Peak’s project is a six mile, multi-duct fiber route in Ashburn, Virginia, which aims to address the need for increased fiber optic connectivity for data center operators. Harbor Peak is a joint initiative which will provide both dark fiber and carrier-neutral network planning services to the region it serves. With increased access to high speed fiber optic cable connectivity, carriers, OTT’s, and other technology companies should expect to see greater support in their digital transport needs. Additionally, Harbor Link’s objective as part of this initiative is to help close the digital divide affecting underserved areas across the D.M.V. (Delaware, Maryland, Virginia) region.

In November of 2022, Harbor Link announced the groundbreaking of an underground fiber infrastructure build in Alexandria, Virginia, to provide local and long-haul dark fiber between Alexandria and Ashburn. With the latest project, Harbor Peak’s Ashburn fiber ring will provide easy access to the fiber route for data centers and network operators. Additionally, Harbor Link broke ground on another related project in 2022, a 60-mile conduit along Maryland’s I-95 and MD RT-97. The Alexandria build amplifies and enhances this project, which will enable high-speed connectivity across the greater Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia markets.

The Harbor Peak project continues Harbor Link’s mission to provide reliable wireless capabilities to underserved communities and businesses in the D.M.V. region to help bridge the digital divide. With other network expansions in the Mid-Atlantic planned, Harbor Link will continue its mission while bringing enhanced connectivity to its customers.

Harbor Peak aims to break ground in the first half of 2023.
