DartPoints, an owner and operator of edge colocation data centers, announced that it has signed definitive agreements to acquire Immedion. Immedion is a provider of colocation, cloud, and managed services with eight data centers in seven markets through South Carolina, North Carolina, Ohio and Indiana. This acquisition is expected to close in the second quarter of 2021.

When it closes, the Immedion acquisition furthers the DartPoints strategy revealed in August 2020 and reinforced last November with the acquisition of Ohio-based Metro Data Centers. The strategy is to build and acquire edge interconnection and colocation facilities throughout the Southwest, Southeast, Upper Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic regions. It’s a strategy focused on delivering lower cost, high-performance solutions in tier two-to-four markets, which DartPoints says are currently underserved.

“We are excited about the combined opportunities Immedion’s colocation facilities bring to DartPoints,” said Scott Willis, CEO of DartPoints. “The team at Immedion has built a great company. This acquisition is yet another example of how we are delivering on our strategy to improve regional interconnection, particularly to markets that need it most.”

Also in November, DartPoints opened their Edge Interconnection Point in Eastern Iowa to enable and expand an open and neutral digital ecosystem. These types of underserved markets have strong business communities, some network infrastructure, and mostly disparate solutions that don’t bring all the pieces together. That project was recognized as “an exemplar to the wider industry” when it earned the DCD>Global Awards Edge Data Center Project of the Year.

“We are proud of the company we’ve become over the past 14 years and look forward to creating more value and opportunities for our customers,” adds Frank Mobley, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Immedion. “Our commitment to delivering best-in-class solutions remains steadfast, and I firmly believe that DartPoints’ mission to enhance connectivity nationally adds value to our existing capabilities. We look forward to enabling our customers with more services and locations, while embarking on a better digital future, together.”

The Immedion deal solidifies the growing recognition of DartPoints, led by Wills, as a disruptor that is shaking up the industry and the way we think about the Edge. The current centralized model for the internet simply cannot hold up under the weight of the newer, emerging application and technologies. Willis told Authority Magazine last year that it’s like trying to drink a milkshake through a six-foot straw.

The answer isn’t a bigger straw, it’s to bring the milkshake closer. Immedion’s eight data centers mean a significant step in bringing content and applications closer to the user in seven important yet underserved markets.
