Every major project reaches a point where years of planning become something tangible. For Sabey Data Centers, that moment arrived at SDC Umatilla last week as the first steel was raised, marking the campus’ “Going Vertical” milestone and the beginning of visible vertical construction.

Held on July 15, the ceremony brought together local and state leaders, community partners, utility partners, contractors, construction teams and Sabey leadership to celebrate the progress of the Northeast Oregon campus. More than a construction milestone, the event reflected the collaboration that has shaped the project from the earliest planning stages and the long-term investment Sabey is making in the region.

Located in the Columbia Cloud Corridor, SDC Umatilla is being developed to meet growing demand for resilient data center infrastructure driven by cloud computing and artificial intelligence. The campus will provide hyperscale, enterprise and colocation customers with the flexibility and connectivity to scale that today’s digital economy requires.

“Watching the first steel go up is always a significant moment because it turns years of planning, engineering and hard work into something you can finally see,” said Tim Mirick, President of Sabey Data Centers. “We are excited to build here, excited to become part of this community, and committed to serving our customers and this region for many years to come.”

The project also highlights Sabey’s commitment to responsible development. State Representative Bobby Levy recognized both the economic impact of the campus and its focus on sustainability:

Facilities like this keep our hospitals, schools, and small businesses connected while creating new economic opportunities. I’m especially pleased that Sabey’s use of a closed-loop cooling system demonstrates that innovation and responsible resource stewardship can go hand in hand. We’re proud to welcome Sabey Data Centers to Northeast Oregon,” Levy said.
