Dani Kate, spokesperson for Riello UPS, says

Uninterruptible power supply plays a significant role in any data center facility where consistent power availability is a linchpin. A UPS system provides filtered power as well as backup power in the event of a power blackout.

However, in the present times when energy costs have enormously multiplied in the past few years, and the environment has been affected adversely, the effective use of energy has become a main cause of concern leading to energy saving UPS systems becoming a new trend in market. Enter energy saving UPS systems.

The issue of energy consumption, however, first occurred in the year 2008 when data center power usage considerably increased, and the US economy came into a deep recession that forced enterprises to look out for ways that can reduce their spending. IT companies started looking at energy efficiency seriously, both in terms of cost reductions, as well as environmental responsibility. The same was indicated in survey data collected by the Data Center Users’ Group in 2009 when the energy efficiency concern had moved to the 2nd position as compared to 5th position in 2005.

Presently, datacenters are one of the heaviest consumers of power and that is why, the issue of energy efficiency is of primary concern to them. Consequently, UPS manufacturers are persistently doing research and development work in order to make the software, design, and energy storage solutions compatible in a way that can lead to reduced losses.

Energy saving can be significantly maximized by using modular and scalable UPS equipment. Also, these days many data center managers are getting accustomed with the energy saving mode of operation for UPS equipment, commonly known as “eco-mode.” This technology for UPS systems has been encouraged in the industry for many years as it is seen as one of the best ways to increase UPS energy efficiency, reduce the operating expenses, and save environment from degrading further.

This technology accomplishes this by using smart control logic to switch quickly, as needed, between a premium efficiency mode and a premium power protection mode. This increases the energy efficiency of converting AC (alternating current) power to DC (direct current) power by plummeting conversion steps required when utility power is tolerable. In case there is a power inconsistency that impacts the load to data center equipment, multi-mode uninterruptible power supplies switch to double conversion mode as quickly as possible.

Lastly, in the present times when conserving the environment is an increasing concern for the whole world, energy saving is not only a matter of cost-savings, but social responsibility. That is why, it is highly important that the electrical efficiency of a UPS system is maximized.

Running costs must be reduced without compromising resilience, that is, the capability to adapt to hostile external conditions, and at the same time ensuring the complete availability of the services provided by a UPS manufacturing company. An energy saving UPS design, presently, has become one of the most important factors for customers as well while comparing the various UPS systems as it creates significant cost savings over the lifespan of the UPS, have a positive impact on the environment and reduce many environmental hazards.
