The amount of data produced every day is astounding. According to IDC, the digital universe is growing by 40 percent every year. Another way to think of it is to consider how long can you go without a specific application? You should also consider Recovery Point Objective (RPO), which is the point in time in the past that you will recover to and dictates the allowable data loss.
