What started in 1989 as a humble “Carrier Appreciation Day” with just 90 golfers has grown into one of the most anticipated events in Iowa’s tech and telecom industry, the Aureon Classic. This year, the Aureon Classic marks its 36th anniversary, continuing a legacy of appreciation, camaraderie, and community that brings together industry leaders from across the Midwest.
Hosted annually by Aureon, a premier provider of connectivity, managed IT, consulting, and contact center solutions, the Classic has evolved far beyond the golf course. It’s a celebration of partnerships, shared success, and a chance to unwind with peers in the industry while honoring the deep-rooted relationships built through Iowa’s Independent Telecommunications Companies (ITCs). The 2025 Classic takes place Wednesday, August 6, across three premier courses: Briarwood Golf Club, Otter Creek Golf Course, and the Tournament Club of Iowa.
A Look Back: How a Game Became a Gathering
From its early days at Willow Creek to its long-standing home at Otter Creek in Ankeny, the event has grown with the community it supports. In 1995, the Classic expanded to six-person teams to welcome more participants. By 2000, demand brought in a second course, Briarwood, and in 2008, the 20th anniversary marked the addition of a third, the Tournament Club of Iowa in Polk City.
Along the way, the Classic became known for more than golf. Who could forget the ribs, the epic cookouts, or the memorable “black tie” 25th anniversary? Over 500 guests are now fed annually, some years requiring nearly 700 pounds of ribs to satisfy everyone. It’s this thoughtful attention to experience, reflective of Aureon’s commitment to service and community, that keeps guests returning year after year.
