As enterprises increasingly seek cost-effective and scalable solutions for real-time data analytics, SingleStore’s strategic shift from cloud-only infrastructure to a high-performance colocation model with Evocative demonstrates how hybrid IT architectures are driving innovation and efficiency.
Initially, SingleStore, a distributed SQL database platform designed for real-time analytics and operational workloads, relied heavily on public cloud infrastructure to better support real-time analytics and AI-driven workloads for its enterprise clients. The company chose to host its workloads with cloud-based platforms because they provided SingleStore the scalability to launch new capabilities without major upfront investment. However, as usage surged and workloads became more demanding, SingleStore encountered significant challenges with this model, such as limited operational visibility and governance and high costs. After uncovering the limitations of their cloud-only infrastructure model, SingleStore determined that it spent nearly 20 times more than it would with an on-premises model.
Recognizing the need for a smarter, long-term solution, SingleStore began to reevaluate its infrastructure model. The company sought an alternative that would deliver predictable performance, reduce spending, and support its global, real-time analytics operations. Evocative emerged as the ideal partner, offering a high-performance, enterprise-grade colocation strategy that could evolve with SingleStore’s business.
The migration began at Evocative’s Emeryville data center with 10 high-density racks. As SingleStore’s needs grew, that footprint expanded to 18 racks, each supporting 17kW of power. Rather than building an internal team to manage the physical infrastructure, SingleStore leaned on Evocative’s remote hands services for day-to-day operations, reducing the need for on-site engineering and streamlining operations.
What began as a shift away from public cloud became a comprehensive transformation of SingleStore’s infrastructure approach. The new setup gave the company complete control over its core environment without the constraints of cloud-only deployments. Automated systems for hardware refreshes and updates minimized manual intervention and improved operational efficiency. Meanwhile, Evocative’s IP transit services ensured consistent, low-latency performance for SingleStore’s global user base. With secure cloud on-ramps integrated into the colocation environment, the company maintained the flexibility to connect with public cloud providers when needed, without relying on the public internet or compromising data governance.
Casey Caster, Director of Technology Program Management at SingleStore, reflected on the transition: “This wasn’t just a move out of the cloud—it was a move toward smarter growth. Evocative gave us the infrastructure we needed to build for the future.”
The benefits were clear. SingleStore saw a dramatic 20X reduction in infrastructure costs, improved system reliability, and a scalable foundation to support its next generation of database innovations. The hybrid-ready environment positioned SingleStore to balance performance and agility, meeting the needs of both traditional enterprise workloads and next-gen AI applications.
Nicole Nemmers, Senior Director of Alliances at SingleStore, echoed the impact of the partnership: “Evocative has been an incredible partner in our infrastructure evolution. The facilities, team, and overall support have been outstanding.”
Looking ahead, SingleStore continues to explore new ways to optimize its infrastructure alongside Evocative. Plans include further centralizing its workloads, expanding into additional colocation facilities, and evaluating Evocative’s bare metal solutions to increase cost-efficiency. With Evocative’s ongoing operational support and expertise, SingleStore is well-positioned to scale its platform and deliver powerful, AI-ready database solutions to enterprises around the world.
