On a recent episode of the Let’s Get Digital podcast, Mike Underdown, founder and CEO of Crosstown Fiber, joined host Carrie Charles for an insightful conversation about building reliable infrastructure, leadership, and the value of doing things the right way. Together, they explored what it takes to build a fiber network that supports Chicago’s most demanding digital needs.

A Career Built on Connectivity

Mike’s path into the telecom world began in the late 80s with entry-level roles at Teleport Communications Group (TCG). Mentored by early industry leaders, he built a strong foundation in sales, network technology, and system design. These experiences would lead him to leadership roles at Adelphia Business Solutions, AT&T, and eventually his own entrepreneurial ventures.

After helping launch Chicago Fiber Systems and playing a strategic role in the growth of 601 Polk Street, a prominent data center later acquired by TierPoint, Mike founded Crosstown Fiber in 2019. The name was inspired by a Crosstown Classic baseball commercial, but the company’s mission was grounded in a serious goal: deliver purpose-built underground fiber for data centers, enterprises, and institutions across the greater Chicago area.

A Different Kind of Fiber Company

Crosstown’s approach is rooted in doing what’s right. From engineering safe and unique fiber routes to avoiding risky infrastructure corridors, Mike and his team are building with intentionality and long-term performance in mind.

On the podcast, Mike emphasized how Crosstown’s 100 percent underground infrastructure provides reliable and resilient connectivity for mission-critical operations. With more than 20,000 fiber strands already deployed and a growing footprint across the region, the company is showing how thoughtful planning and collaboration can deliver real results.

He also discussed the real-world impacts of digital infrastructure on local communities. From job creation to increased tax revenue and broadband equity, Mike stressed the importance of building infrastructure that not only performs well but benefits the people it serves.

Looking Ahead

Crosstown is continuing its expansion into the collar states around Illinois, prioritizing unique, low-risk routes that avoid congestion, overbuild, and utility conflicts. Operating under a design-build-operate model, the company stays closely involved from planning through execution.

As Mike shared with Carrie, fiber infrastructure is not just about bandwidth or scale. It’s about trust, transparency, and building something that lasts. That mindset continues to define Crosstown’s work and reputation.
