How will storage virtualization change in the future?
We’ve seen the evolution of storage virtualization to be largely following that of server virtualization. If you look at where server virtualization technologies such as VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V are today, you can see not only widespread adoption across all verticals and sizes of enterprise, but also a large ecosystem of related solutions and services that further enhance the benefits. Similarly, you can expect to see an ecosystem develop around storage virtualization technologies that help companies better manage their data. For example, in the case of storage tiering, most solutions today implement tiering policies based on relatively simplistic criteria such as file age, type, size, etc. Eventually, you will see closer integration of data classification and indexing technologies that will help further refine and enable much more powerful tiering policies.
