Dani Kate, spokesperson for Riello UPS, says

The increasing intensity of power outages can have a severe impact on businesses of thousands of dollars per second. To save the business from such havoc, uninterrupted power supply systems which are popularly known as UPS systems comes in the scene. It is an electronic device which is known to support critical electronic infrastructure of an organization such as servers, computers, data communication systems and other related equipment from sudden power failure or voltage fluctuations. UPS power backups are always kept in standby mode that provides power instantaneously when there is downtime during short-term power outages. They also have the potential to prevent data loss and eliminate power surges, spikes and noises.

Towards this end, the first and foremost task of the organization is to categorize the different kinds of loads into critical, essential and non-essential. This will help in identifying those that warrant UPS protection and those that do not.

While differentiating between different load categories,

  • Critical loads will surely be those without which businesses simply cannot function. These include IT infrastructure, networks, routers, servers and much more.
  • Essential loads will constitute those loads that will not necessarily affect the business as such but it will have an impact in an indirect manner. For instance, the power outage can hamper in heating and emergency lighting that may have adverse consequences on health and safety of the individual.
  • Non-Essential loads such as printers, scanners, canteen facilities are categorized into this unit as they do not require any form of protection from UPS systems. Their state of non-functionality will have no severe impact on the overall functioning of the organization.

After categorizing, the next thing to keep in mind while designing is to efficiently size an uninterruptible power supply system which can sometimes be tricky. Under sizing will greatly increase the risk of system overload and can hamper its functioning whereas; oversizing will run inefficiently and will involve more installation costs. In such a scenario, it becomes pertinent to understand the real difference and importance of real power and apparent power. Kilowatt (kW) is a measure of real power and kilovolt-amps (kVA), measure for apparent power. They are distinguished from one another on the parameter of power factor. While spelling out the specifications for UPS systems, size is regarded as a determining factor.

Energy wastage should be minimised to the barest minimum so far as power protection systems are concerned. An efficient UPS system would be the one that is responsible for producing small footprint and consequently not take up major share of revenue-earning rack space.

Uninterruptible power supply manufacturers in India have created a niche in manufacturing various UPS configurations. They can manufacture UPS systems based on single, parallel or series configurations resulting in different levels of availability and resilience.

Therefore, these days, datacentre UPS systems in Indiacome with either an internal or external maintenance bypass which facilitates easy servicing of the entire datacentre. There is no need to bring the entire network to halt and loose productivity. If the UPS system is properly maintained in a timely manner, the longevity of the UPS system is greatly increased and you can get a better return on your investment. Power protection thus, is vital for any organization.
